Tailored-Beam Ultrashort Laser Pulses
نویسنده
چکیده
Laser pulses with picosecond and femtosecond durations are now indispensable tools in many scientific disciplines. These ultrashort pulses provide unique temporal resolutions for investigations of phenomena taking place in comparable time ranges. In addition, optical energies squeezed into such short time windows yield extremely high peak powers and intensities, paving the way to generate unprecedented light-matter interactions. On the other side, recent advances in spatial light intensity and phase modulation devices enables generation of laser beam profiles with intriguing physical properties. By merging the two realms, optics researchers can now have the ability to harness light both in space and time. These possibilities bring about new physical interactions and significantly facilitate many applications of lasers.

Ultrashort, Strongly Focused Laser Pulses in Free Space
Technological advances in ultrafast optics now allow the generation of laser pulses whose duration is as short as a few optical cycles of the electric field; furthermore, these pulses can be focused to a spot size comparable to the wavelength. These strongly focused, ultrashort laser pulses have found applications, for instance, in high-resolution microscopy, particle trapping and electron acce...
متن کاملMultiphoton intrapulse interference. IV. Ultrashort laser pulse spectral phase characterization and compensation.
We introduce a noninterferometric single beam method to characterize and compensate the spectral phase of ultrashort femtosecond pulses accurately. The method uses a pulse shaper that scans calibrated phase functions to determine the unknown spectral phase of a pulse. The pulse shaper can then be used to synthesize arbitrary phase femtosecond pulses or it can introduce a compensating spectral p...
متن کاملPost-filament self-trapping of ultrashort laser pulses.
Laser filamentation is understood to be self-channeling of intense ultrashort laser pulses achieved when the self-focusing because of the Kerr nonlinearity is balanced by ionization-induced defocusing. Here, we show that, right behind the ionized region of a laser filament, ultrashort laser pulses can couple into a much longer light channel, where a stable self-guiding spatial mode is sustained...
متن کاملANL/APS/LS-320 Electron beam-based sources of ultrashort x-ray pulses
A review of various methods for generation of ultrashort x-ray pulses using relativistic electron beam from conventional accelerators is presented. Both spontaneous and coherent emission of electrons is considered. Introduction The importance of the time-resolved studies of matter at picosecond (ps), femtosecond (fs), and atttosecond (as) time scales using x-rays has been widely recognized incl...
متن کاملPolarization Dependence of Bulk Ion Acceleration from Ultrathin Foils Irradiated by High-Intensity Ultrashort Laser Pulses.
The acceleration of ions from ultrathin (10-100 nm) carbon foils has been investigated using intense (∼6×10^{20} W cm^{-2}) ultrashort (45 fs) laser pulses, highlighting a strong dependence of the ion beam parameters on the laser polarization, with circularly polarized (CP) pulses producing the highest energies for both protons and carbons (25-30 MeV/nucleon); in particular, carbon ion energi...
